And if you just want to learn about how things work, then the book will show you some big ideas without hitting you with big words too. Even if you know many big ideas, it is fun to see them get very small. I cannot more highly recommend that you get this for yourself, your favorite nerd, or someone who just loves beautiful drawings." -Scientific American "One of the charms of this new book is that it imbues everything between its covers with a childlike and unpretentious sense of delight in humanity's intellectual achievements." Funny, interesting, and always understandable, this book is for anyone-age 5 to 105-who has ever wondered how things work, and why. In Thing Explainer, he uses line drawings and only the thousand (or, rather, "ten hundred") most common words to provide simple explanations for some of the most interesting stuff there is, including: food-heating radio boxes (microwaves) tall roads (bridges) computer buildings (datacenters) the shared space house (the International Space Station) the other worlds around the sun (the solar system) the big flat rocks we live on (tectonic plates) the pieces everything is made of (the periodic table) planes with turning wings (helicopters) boxes that make clothes smell better (washers and dryers) the bags of stuff inside you (cells) How do these things work? Where do they come from? What would life be like without them? And what would happen if we opened them up, heated them up, cooled them down, pointed them in a different direction, or pressed this button? In Thing Explainer, Munroe gives us the answers to these questions and so many more. Have you ever tried to learn more about some incredible thing, only to be frustrated by incomprehensible jargon? Randall Munroe is here to help. Nesbitt in real life is involved with Belfast’s Wave Trauma Centre which, among other things, campaigns on behalf of the families of the “Disappeared” – 16 people, mostly civilians, who were kidnapped, killed and deposited in unmarked graves by republican paramilitary groups during the Troubles. Those unconvincing later moments are joined by a scattering of doubts throughout – mostly raised by the fact that Nesbitt’s portrayal of a man numbed and scoured out by suffering and uncertainty occasionally leaves you wishing there was a little more outward expression to cling on to. But something is discovered which is going to make Twomey’s desire to cover things up a lot harder to fulfil. This is followed by a similarly unpersuasive moment when Brannick’s partner realises they have been digging in the wrong place (it turns out there’s a second tree on the island, and despite the witness statement saying she had been feeding the cows, they had set out from the point of view of the farmhouse, not the cowshed). At first it seems futile – and there is an unconvincing scene in which Brannick suddenly goes mad with grief when the soil refuses to yield any bodies. Twomey hasn’t reckoned with the evidence accumulated over the intervening years by the brother of one of the missing people, which leads to a surviving witness statement (though not, alas, a surviving witness) about mysterious digging going on “between the bothy and the tree” on a lough island at the time the four went missing. Twomey also has the Goliath files removed from the archive and Brannick’s supportive-of-investigating-kidnappings-properly boss removed from her post to make sure his wishes are followed. As a mere visit to Keenan’s wife (Derry Girls’ Kathy Kiera Clarke), who has not yet reported her husband missing, results in the police station being petrol bombed, this at first seems like an understandable instinct. DCS Jackie Twomey (Lorcan Cranitch) is keen that the apparent re-emergence of Goliath doesn’t upset things now and warns Brannick off widening the Keenan investigation and opening old wounds. It emerges that the four disappearances were hushed up at the time in order not to jeopardise the imminent peace agreement. “Is there something you’re not telling me?” she asks suspiciously as they leave the loughside. Not that his detective sergeant Niamh McGovern (Charlene McKenna) is aware of all of this immediately. One of them – if you have avoided all the programme publicity, in which this twist was frequently sacrificed in order to secure your attention, what I am about to say will count as a spoiler – was Brannick’s wife. Brannick recognises a paramilitary code and a modus operandi that puts him on the trail of “Goliath” – the unidentified suspected killer of four people who disappeared in the lead-up to the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. A caller rings to say that the owner of the van, Pat Keenan, has been kidnapped. So Jesus, a Jewish man from the Middle East, probably didn’t look like the Nordic Messiah portrayed on the church fans of my childhood. “Even with that, over the centuries in the West there have been changing fashions in the way Christ was represented that are as variable as hem lines,” she added. Taylor, a professor who studies early Christianity and Judaism at King’s College London, and the author of “What Did Jesus Look Like?” The artists, she added, were referring to “other gods the people of that era would know.” “Early Christian artists appropriated images of the long haired pagan gods like Zeus to symbolize the power of Jesus,” said Joan E. There is also a long tradition of adapted local appearances and iconography to the Christian message in the West. The images of the Old Testament prophets are Japanese images.” “The images of his disciples are Japanese images. “The images of Jesus are Japanese images,” Dr. Tamura employed local artists to illustrate his books. Tamura Naoumi, an American-educated Japanese pastor in the early 20th century, sought to change the Western-based Sunday school images of Jesus to those reflecting his culture and that of his students. Hastings, who taught for decades in Japan, recalled how the Rev. Thomas Hastings, the executive director of the Overseas Ministries Study Center in New Haven, Conn., said, “They did their own version of Christianity, to put it simply.”ĭr. “Christianity around the world was becoming less white, and pictures of Jesus hanging in churches from Jordan to Japan to Jamaica were looking more like the people, instead of the standard white portraits from Europe or North America,” said Todd Johnson, co-director of the Center for the Study of Global Christianity, at the Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Mass. Only I didn’t know it.īy the middle of the 20th century, the global center of Christianity had begun shifting away from Europe to Africa, Asia and Latin America. Baptist church there that killed four little girls, the youngest not much older than I - even in my innocence, worshiping someone who didn’t look like us seemed incongruous.Īs it turns out, at about that time, “God” as depicted in the form of Jesus Christ was beginning to look more and more like me. This confounded me as a young child - the image of a white Christ (in my case, blond and blue-eyed) - printed on the hand-held fans cooling the black congregants of my grandmother’s church in Los Angeles.Įven at that age, with only a peripheral awareness of the brutal attacks on civil rights marchers in Birmingham, Ala., and the bombing of the 16th St. And whether he is a dashboard Jesus or the nearly 100-foot tall Cristo Redentor, arms outstretched atop a mountain rising over Rio de Janeiro, he is likely to be male - and white. Likely as not, the image that presents itself to most Americans is of a lithe, bearded man with shoulder-length, chestnut-colored hair. Is the man kneeling in prayer in the Garden at Gethsemane Chinese? Is the man sitting at the table of the Last Supper Navajo? Is the man dragging his cross toward Golgotha Nigerian? Or is the crucified figure a woman? Close your eyes and imagine that Jesus is in front of you. Is it because they don’t like to play computer games or are they lacking the confidence to give it a try? Maybe it is something completely different. I never followed up on that to determine why, which is something I wish I had done each year. Still, there were a number of students who did not access the game expect when they were required to by me. I even had one student ask if the class could have time playing Sumdog for a class birthday celebration! It is not uncommon for students to answer more than a thousand questions in a single week and ask to play during indoor recess. The enthusiasm generated by this program was far more than I had expected when I began using it, which makes it a valuable resource. As an assessment tool it became more valuable being able to see what skills have been mastered, the speed at which questions are being answered, the percentage of correct responses for each skill and which are a student’s weakest skills. This allows teachers to create class and school challenges and contests, but more importantly we can use the report feature of the program. Last summer I helped convince our principal to purchase a subscription for all of the 3rd and 4th grade students. Clearly it is primarily for skill practice, but since beginning to use it four years ago, the website designers have added additional math concepts such as measurement and word problems. It certainly did that, but as it has evolved, so have my objectives. My objective for using this site originally was to motivate students to practice their multiplication/division and addition/subtraction facts. Most of the animals featured are endangered, so it becomes a lesson on nature as well. A link that brings students to a Wikipedia article about the animal also is included. What is really neat about these levels is there are interesting facts about the animals located on the level description. As they correctly answer questions, they can move up to different animal levels. All students begin at the brown rat level. Additionally, they can save their virtual money to buy access to new games.Ī final motivation for students are the different animal levels. Items have different values, so students may need to save their coins and play more to earn enough for certain things. When teachers open the virtual store students can “purchase” new clothing and accessories for their avatars. For each correct answer students earn a virtual coin that is deposited into their virtual bank account. While the games themselves are engaging enough to make students want to play regularly, another factor is their avatar and the coins they win while playing. And while Moritou’s manga was presented through the eyes of a target reader-aged avatar of sorts in the form of Akira Katagai, Shintaku’s manga tended to only cast humans as part of the story backdrop and chose to keep things focused on the Micromen themselves–and furthermore often starred characters based upon figures which never appeared in Moritou’s saga (such as the M111 and M122 type figures) as well as some other Microman toys that never made it to the TV Magazine series. What the Bouken Oh Microman manga lacked in page count and art quality, it made up in regularity–the manga series ran monthly without interruption for 62 consecutive issues, from February of 1976 through March of 1981 (actually continuing a fair bit later than Moritou’s series). TV Magazine also had similar giveaways, but this one was featured directly at the end of Bouken Oh’s manga each month. Often fifty lucky winners would get a brand new, just-released figure, while the ten luckiest would get a larger prize such as a Robotman. The manga also was accompanied with a monthly contest where lucky participants could win the latest Microman figures and toys. Also Shintaku’s art style was clearly not on par with Moritou’s, albeit filled with a lot of character. While that version featured irregular but lengthy installments (often about 60 pages per installment!), often featured prominently ln pack-in supplement volumes and with lots of educational tie-in content and large advertisement spreads, the Bouken Oh version was more of a “filler” manga, usually only four to six pages each chapter, while the toy ads were more often limited to single splash page appearances. This particular presentation of Microman, though, was quite different from the more famous TV Magazine version from Moritou. And while a licensed manga series started in Kodansha’s TV Magazine January of 1976 by Yoshihiro Moritou that would become known as one of his most popular works and later even further integrated into the main and later canon of the toys, it was not the only manga adaptation licensed during this period.Ī rival magazine, Bouken Oh ( Adventure King) from Akita Publishing, also started a Microman manga series the following month, penned by Yoshimistu Shintaku.īouken Oh (1949-1983, name changed to TV Anime Magazine until ending in later in 1984) was a good home for the series, often featuring manga tied in with popular programming for young boys such as tokusatsu heroes, super robots, and SF anime, with a number of well-known manga artists contributing regularly over the years. The Microman line of toys was a breakaway hit for Takara after its debut in 1974. Tiny Titan Microman: the “Lost Adventures” - Year One (1976) |
